Gynecomastia surgery reduces the size of the breasts in men, smoothing and improving the contours of the chest. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue can cause the breasts to flare and stretch the areola, in these cases, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and the excess skin can be reduced.
While losing weight can help reduce the appearance of breasts for some men, there is often too much glandular tissue, which causes even very thin patients to notice enlarged breasts. Currently, male breast reduction is the only effective treatment for gynecomastia that has lasting, if not permanent, results.

Gynecomastia surgery can be in the form of liposuction, a procedure to remove breast fat, but not the breast tissue itself, or a mastectomy, a surgical procedure that involves removal of the tissue under the breast.
