The technique involves first accessing the bone and cartilage that support of the nose. This is achieved by incisions made inside the nose, where they are invisible. In some cases, an incision is made in the area of the skin that separates the nostrils. Next, the underlying bone and cartilage are reduced, enlarged or rearranged to create a new structure. For example, if the tip of the nose is too large, the cartilage in this area can be sculpted to reduce the size.
If the bridge of the nose has a prominence, this can be reduced to produce a more pleasing profile. If any part of the nose seems disproportionately small, cartilage or soft tissue grafts can be placed to create a better harmony. The angles of the nose in relation to the upper lip or forehead can also be altered by further sculpting the nasal support structure.
Your surgeon will ask you to use a nasal splint during the first 7-10 days after rhinoplasty. You may have moderate swelling and bruising around the eyes that could last up to two weeks. You should also avoid physical activity until four weeks after surgery.
A nose job can be performed at the same time as other surgeries, such as septoplasty, which is done to straighten a deviated septum that hinders breathing through the nose. The combination is often called functional rhinoplasty.
